Hey all, in case you are "in the market" for better/different fonts than currently on your computer, have a look at (I kid you not...) Font Squirrel. The fonts there are all free for personal, free, and commercial works. They verify the license before it is listed on their site.

I really like these two fonts for books, they don't do well on the screen but at 200% zoom they're great.

Getting Started with Ruby (Installation)

Getting Started

To start with, you need to read around the official website of the Ruby language. In fact, before I tell you how to install Ruby for yourself, try it out in the browser in a fifteen minute interactive tutorial.

Installation

Installing the Interpreter

Download: ftp://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/binarie...swin32.zip

Once you have the archive you must have a place to put it. This can either be within Program Files, or in a custom directory. I tend to use "C:\Utils\Ruby" but that's just me. Extract the archive and then continue.

Now what you have to do is add Ruby, the binary executable, to the system path so that when you type (in the console) "ruby" it knows to load the program. This is much simpler than it sounds! Right-click My Computer and select Properties, then click the Advanced tab and the Environment Variables button at the bottom of the form. If you see a window titled Environment Variables then you are at the right place. Scroll the bottom scroll-box until you see "Path" or "PATH" in the left column; select it then click Edit. Click in the "Variable Value" field and then press the End key, now type: "; c:\path\to\my ruby\bin". Make sure to have, after the root path of the extracted archive, the "bin" directory, as that is where the executable is. That done, accept your way out of all the dialogs.

Needed DLL Libraries

The vanilla distribution of Ruby comes without several required libraries, so to make this simple I've zipped them for you. Extract these to "C:\path\to\my ruby\bin" and forget about them.
[attachment=14]

Installing RubyGems

One of the nicest things about Ruby is that there is a central distribution method for modules. If you want to parse Textile or Markdown into (X)HTML then there are multiple options for you.

Download: http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=126&release_id=27655

Extract this archive to a temporary folder and then open the command prompt. One of the fastest ways to do this is Windows-Key+R then "cmd"; this will bring up the command prompt immediately, without having to hunt and peck for the shortcut.

Now that you've got the console up, go to that temporary folder ("cd C:\temp\rubyuems-1.3.1", where "cd" means change-directory) and do the following: "ruby setup.rb" Now sit back, and watch the simplicity of having a language extension install itself.

Now you can freely delete this temporary folder as RubyGems is installed. However, leave the console up (make sure to "cd c:\" so that the working directory exists!).

Hello, World!

Now that you have Ruby it is time to show you the requisite "Hello World!" application. This is extremely simple, so pay attention!

Take the console and type the letters IRB then hit enter. Now you are in an interactive Ruby prompt, and can design anything. For now this is the simplest way to learn the language. To exit just type exit, it's quite a simple console.

To output "Hello, World!" write the following code into the IRB prompt:

Code:

p "Hello, World!"

And you will see:

Code:

irb(main):001:0> p "Hello, World!"
"Hello, World!"
=> nil

Cool! But what's that "=> nil" thing? Remember, this is an interactive prompt! You told the console: print "Hello, World!". But the console always outputs the result of a function, in this case "nil" because nothing is returned (nil is nothing).

You can do the same with the following functions, which is what the "p" was before the string. Print writes out whatever strings are sent to it, but without an ending linebreak; P outputs the things sent to it within a set of quotes and follows it by a linebreak.

Now you're on the path to being a Ruby programmer. There's a long way to go, and many concepts to cover, but this is a start. If your results differ, or you get exceptions and difficulties, just post here and I'll help you get set up.

Well, this isn't good news. In fact, if I weren't so blase about all this I'd be pulling my hair out about now.

Long story short, the reinstallation went just fine. Until I realized that the first, and failed, attempt didn't work because XP's setup utility tried to install on my backup drive! Yeah, since I had it do the standard quick format everything was gone including my latest backups. (I still have my links though, I put them on the memory stick.)

Some three hours after the fact, and $55 poorer, I have come to the conclusion that all my data is, in fact, completely lost. Oh, I have some of the old stuff from at least four reformats old, but nothing new has survived: including My Documents (with all my records), and my latest work.

However, we have the good fortune to know that the website I've been working on for the Church is safe. I put it into online source control just last week, so that is just about the only good note in this entire day. Plus all my emails, and their serial codes; I think I can get some of these back, however.

I've just lost about three years worth of work in programming, plus about eight in graphics. Now to find all my fonts again, and hope I can remember my passwords.

(Edit: Yep, my emails are safe though my address book isn't. Now I just have to download a few thousand messages...)

Hey everyone, I found a neat new theme today that is minimalist and uses almost no images excepting as icons (and smilies, but that isn't a part of the theme). The cool thing is, in Firefox 3 the header text (the stuff that says "Flea's Forums") has a neat glossy style; I don't know how the designer did it, but it's really nifty.

To change to the new theme, which is named Aardvark, go to the Options page of your User CP and on the lower right-hand corner there are two boxes: Board Style, and Board Language. Change the value of the Board Style to Aardvark to see the new style.

Sooner or later it might become the new default! (At which point it won't matter if you switch it over or not.)

Hah!
Not 1 percent through the scan my PC freezes, and when I try the scroll wheel I get that flat PC tone: doooooo.
So here I am on a laptop, hoping that it was only my registry that got wiped. (Windows gave a BSoD stating this.) I really don't want to lose all my work!

How to secure your Windows computer

Important Stuff First!

First of all, don't download an all-in-one package: they aren't nearly as great as they're hyped up to be. Second, don't use multiple anti-virus solutions or else they'll conflict with each other and mess your system up. Third, if in doubt don't use just one anti-spyware package, but load up a second to scan your system clean; anti-spyware works three times better when scans overlap.

Fourth, and most importantly, never pay a dime for your home security (software, not hardware firewalls) unless someone is purposefully and repeatedly trying to take you out! I can't stress this enough. You don't get what you pay for unless you're a business, so don't!

Anti-Virus

Anti-virus has become a huge industry, but the problem with the long standing "solutions" is that they become the problem: bloat, inefficiency, and old code. In my opinion, packages like Norton and McAfee aren't decent solutions any longer--virus authors know the methodology of their hunting algorithms, and could possibly evade specific software.

So, for free software which do I find to be the best? My preferred solutions are (I use the bolded):

Avast! 4 Personal

AVG Anti-Virus

AntiVir

If you're after a paid package I do not suggest Kaspersky, their trial for Windows 7 was abominable. The auto-update was just an auto-nag to get the user to update, the built in firewall/registry-guardian asked permission for every address and not the application itself; as you might expect, this tends to get annoying in short order.

Anti-Spyware

There are 2 kinds of anti-spyware: blockers and removers. I personally prefer the first as it prevents the need to remove anything the bulk of the time. To block something is better than to remove it after it may have had time to compromise your computer.

Blockers

Spyware Blaster

AVG Anti-Spyware (trial/paid period only)

Spybot Search & Destroy (maybe, but the application is a resource hog...)

Removers

AVG Anti-Spyware (fast and light on the system)

Lavasoft Ad-aware

Spybot Search & Destroy (again, a bit of a pig.)

Firewalls

There are a bunch out there, but ZoneAlarm Free is the one I've used for years. Aside from being a little annoying at times, popups whenever something is updated, it's perfectly adequate. I currently have no firewall because we've got a firewall that is nearly military grade sitting right after our internet connection, so we're really secure there already.

Miscellaneous Utilities

Hard Drive Defragmentation

It's important to defrag your hard drive at least once every two months, more frequently if you install and uninstall a large amount of things during that time. Instead of the default Windows defrag utility, I suggest JkDefrag which is much lighter weight. The cool thing is that you can set JkDefrag as your screensaver and never run a defrag on your system again!

Another choice is Defraggler, which is rather new. It doesn't have the speed, or options, that JkDefrag does, but what it does have is pretty cool too: analyze your computer and then either defrag or pick the specific files you want defragmented. Considering that Firefox freaks out whenever you defrag while it is running, you move its cache and profiles, this is handy. Just close FF, scan, and then sort by directory and defrag Firefox first.

CD/DVD Burning

If you want ultra-portable go for InfraRecorder: it even comes as a zip so you can drop it on a flash-drive.

Or, alternatively, check out DeepBurner.

Music Players

Music players like RealPlayer and Windows Media Player spy on your privacy whether you like them to or not. (Even if you tell them not to.) So, I suggest XMPlay; it plays anything, can be skinned, is light and fast, and is free and spy-free. Another, newer, choice is Songbird, which is very nice and Firefox-inspired; so far it has been light on the system resources.
